Retire in Europe publishes practical guides for Americans and Brits who are thinking about moving to Southern Europe: Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Malta, Cyprus and Hungary. Some of our readers are retiring. Others work remotely, are moving with children, or want a second home base they can rely on if plans change at home.

Moving abroad is a big, expensive decision, and the rules behind it change often. We try to give you the information we’d want ourselves: what each visa really requires, what life costs month to month, where people like you choose to live, and what to sort out before you go.

Who we write for

  • Americans comparing visa routes, taxes and healthcare outside the US.
  • Brits who lost freedom of movement after Brexit and want to know which doors are still open.
  • Retirees and early retirees living on pensions, savings or investment income.
  • Remote workers and families who need a visa that allows them to work and a place that suits children.

How we research

Every visa, tax and healthcare page starts from official sources: government immigration portals, consulates, tax authorities and health ministries. We link to each source and show the date we last checked it. Where official guidance is unclear or applied inconsistently, we say so rather than guess.

Pages about visas, taxes, pensions and healthcare are reviewed by a licensed professional who practises in that country, such as an immigration lawyer or a registered tax adviser. You’ll see their name and credentials at the top of the page and on their profile.

Read the full process in our editorial guidelines.

How we make money

Some pages link to companies that help with relocation, such as residency and property specialists, insurers or movers. If you contact a company through one of these links, we may be paid a referral fee. That never changes what we write about a country or a visa. Paid relationships are labelled where they appear, and our editors decide rankings and recommendations using the criteria published on each page.

Our guides are general information. Your situation may differ, and rules change. Before you apply for a visa, move money or change your tax residence, speak to a qualified professional. See our disclaimer.
